After more than six months of collaboration and joint contributions, we’re excited to announce our partnership with Backstage to power their official codemods.
Backstage users and their agents now have the automation they need to adopt the latest features in their favorite developer portal as new releases roll out. Paul Schultz at Red Hat covers how to use these codemods as part of an upgrade on the Backstage blog.
Read on to learn more about Backstage and how Codemod helps developers and some of the world’s largest enterprises maintain and modernize their stack efficiently and with confidence.
About Backstage
Backstage is an open source framework for building internal developer portals. Spotify created it and donated it to the CNCF, where it is an incubating project. Hundreds of enterprises use it, such as American Airlines, Expedia Group, LinkedIn, Siemens, and Booking.com. A portal built with Backstage starts from a software catalog of services, APIs, and infrastructure, then adds the plugins a company builds for its own engineers.
Codemod for the community
Here is the Backstage v1.52 upgrade from start to finish: one command, a local report to review, and the published package on the Codemod Registry.
To try it, run this in your Backstage repository:
npx codemod @backstage/v1-52-0-migration-recipeFramework and SDK maintainers use these open source tools to build migrations and publish them:
- Codemod CLI — scaffold, publish, and run codemods from the terminal.
- JSSG (JS ast-grep) — Codemod's open-source code mining and transformation runtime built around ast-grep.
- Codemod Workflows — run a migration as a sequence of steps, including steps that call AI.
- Agent Skills — an open source set of CLI-first tools and instructions for Claude, Codex, Cursor, and other coding agents to analyze code, generate codemods, and run them.
- Codemod Registry — discover, share, and run codemods. Each package carries its own metadata.
We also sponsor and contribute to ast-grep, a polyglot toolkit for querying and transforming code.
Codemod for the enterprise
Platform teams use Codemod to run the same migration across many repositories and keep a record of what changed.
Here is the same Backstage v1.52 recipe in Codemod Insights: connect a repository, get a dashboard of the work by team and by task, share it, and customize any widget in the UI, with Codemod Agent, or from local agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor.
Enterprise capabilities include:
- Codemod Grep — Structural code search and navigation for humans and agents that scales across thousands of enterprise repos.
- Codemod Insights — dashboards for migration progress across codebases.
- Codemod Campaigns — coordinate one migration across teams and repositories.
- Codemod Agent — the in-app AI assistant.
- Codemod MCP — Give all of your agents the context and intelligence layer they need to operate reliably and efficiently at enterprise scale.
- SOC 2 Type II — an independent audit of Codemod's security controls.
Besides our self-serve platform, through partnerships with certified service providers, we deliver fully managed migration and modernization projects across different tech stacks. 👉 Get in touch to learn more about the open source tools and the enterprise product.
